Try to name one well known business that doesn't successfully promote itself on the web! All flourishing companies need a website in this day and age - they'd soon fall behind if they didn't. With one web address, a whole series of pages can act as a point of contact, a business promoter, a sales brochure, and a product educator. Very often when we're looking to buy something, the first thing we do is a product search on Google to find suppliers, make cost comparisons etc.
Naturally, the rapid growth of websites on the internet has led to a great demand for web designers. Maybe you fancy yourself as a web designer. To learn your trade and become certified you can train part-time at home on your computer, or part or full-time at college with a group of others. Don't be tempted to rush into registering on the first course you see - allow yourself time to look around. Weigh up how you could incorporate the training methods into your everyday life, and the quality, value and industry relevance each course has.
Your training program must equip you with a good level of proficiency to be competent in industry. First of all though you need to be familiar with the fact that there are web developers as well as web designers.
Web developers learn programming skills, and essentially work on the 'out-of-sight' areas of a website (such as the processing of credit card payments). This feature deals with courses and work in web design, where as the name suggests the focus is on the design aspects of websites.
To become a web designer you must have a creative talent. Plus it's very useful to be good with people, because you'll find there's a lot of contact with the customer. Very often the client will come with an idea of how they want their site to look. It's up to the web designer then to build a website to the required spec that delivers in both visual appeal and usability. A good designer will also be able to advise and educate the client on the best tools to feature on their site within a certain budget.
Students are trained how to use a number of Adobe products on the majority of web design courses. Becoming Adobe trained enables students to gain a number of Adobe certificates, which are universally acknowledged in business. Both Adobe Flash Creative Suite 4 and Adobe Dreamweaver Creative Suite 4 are practical products to get to grips with. Adobe abbreviate Creative Suite 4 to CS4 - make sure you don't register on a course still teaching CS3. Dreamweaver will give you the ability to create exciting and innovative designs for web pages. Skills in Flash will bring those pages to life, with interactivity and animated movement. Collectively they are considered the best tools for a design student to master.
Learning the skills and building your own personal portfolio of website designs during your course are the most essential elements for getting into industry. A great deal of what constitutes good web design is subjective, and so you must be able to show what you can do at interview. If you're planning to work for yourself, you may not need to take any professional certifications. If however you are looking to achieve professional status, ensure your training will lead to either Adobe Certified Expert (ACE), or Adobe Certified Professional (ACP).
Don't sell yourself short though by limiting your skills to just the stuff we can see on the screen. In addition to the design tools above, why not consider which other skills will enhance your career opportunities? A certain knowledge of HTML and CSS will help to make your skills more well-rounded. Then some teaching on dynamic or extended HTML and PHP Programming will help you to start getting to grips with dynamic sites. Next comes e-commerce - where financial interactions need to happen via the website. And to conclude the list for now, a requirement that's very overlooked by many is SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation.
To avoid your websites getting lost in the ether and ineffectual, you should gain an understanding of how to optimise sites on Google and Yahoo. With many millions of websites out there, the most stylish website in the world is only of any use if customers can find it!
